Why Carbon Accounting?

Regulation, value chain partners, and consumers are increasing the pressure on businesses to reduce their environmental impact.

Carbon accounting is no longer optional; it’s a critical step towards progressing sustainability, enhancing operational efficiency, and staying competitive. It empowers businesses to take control of their carbon footprint and remain relevant in their industry.

Governments worldwide are implementing stricter regulations on GHG emissions, and mandatory disclosure is gaining momentum. Simultaneously, consumers, B2B customers, and investors demand greater transparency, commitment, and accountability.

46% of respondents to the UK Net Zero Business Census Report 2024 stated they had received customer or tender applications that required carbon footprint data in the last 12 months. This included 37% of SME respondents who fall outside regulatory requirements like SECR or CSRD, showing that requirements to measure carbon emissions are flowing down through supply chains to affect companies of all sizes.

Case Study 2: Repair or Replace Carbon Footprint Study for Allianz

Client:
Allianz, a global leader in insurance services

Challenge:
Allianz sought to better understand the environmental impacts of repairing versus replacing damaged automotive parts as part of its carbon reduction strategy. The aim was to provide clear, data-driven insights to optimise repair decisions and reduce carbon emissions in their automotive claims process.

Our Support: Oakdene Hollins collaborated with Allianz on this innovative project, which progressed through two distinct phases:

Phase 1: Scoping Study. The initial study focused on the carbon footprint of repairing versus replacing bumpers from a VW ID3. This provided a foundational understanding of the emissions trade-offs and feasibility of repair-centric strategies.

Phase 2: Comprehensive Study. Building on the insights from Phase 1, the scope expanded to include five additional vehicle parts: front doors, rear doors, windscreen, fender, and bonnet. For each component, multiple scenarios were analyzed, considering:
• Repair vs. Replace: Evaluating the GHG emissions for both options.
• Workshop Energy Sources: Comparing conventional workshops to solar-powered facilities.
• Geographic Variability: Analysing scenarios in four key markets: Italy, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

Impact:
Data-Driven Insights for Carbon Reduction: Allianz gained clarity on the carbon impact of repair vs. replace decisions, discovering that repairing items like LED headlights or windshields could cut emissions by up to 99%.

Global and Operational Impact: The study identified significant carbon savings, especially in solar-powered workshops, and provided actionable insights applicable across Allianz’s international operations.

Sustainability Integration: By prioritising repairs in carbon-efficient settings and optimising workshop processes, Allianz enhanced emissions reductions and reinforced its leadership in sustainable insurance practices.

The goals were to enable SYNETIQ to meet the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirements, identify carbon reduction opportunities, and improve data collection for long-term emissions tracking.

Our Support: Oakdene Hollins provided expertise in GHG emissions accounting and decarbonisation strategy development through the following steps:

Comprehensive Emissions Assessment: Conducted detailed analyses of SYNETIQ’s Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, producing a tailored carbon report aligned with GHG Protocol and SECR requirements.
