Waste management – a key player in the transition to a circular economy was the subject of an afternoon event at the European Parliament in Brussels attended by Oakdene Hollins in June.
Chair and Moderator of the event was Eva Kaili, STOA First Vice-Chair.
Johan van Dessel of the Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) gave a talk on "Volume versus value: Experience of the Belgian construction sector". His talk was followed by Ton Bastein, Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) on "Volume versus value: Experience of the Dutch bio-waste sector".
Nathalie Buijs of the European Federation of Waste Management and Environmental Services (FEAD) spoke on "How to tackle landfilling", and Marie Münster of DTU Management Engineering, Technical University of Denmark on "Energy in the Circular Economy".
Two more talks followed: "Making waste collection work for the Circular Economy", by Konstantinos Malandrinos of Municipal Waste Europe ; and "Waste prevention" by Ferran Rosa of Zero Waste Europe.
The event closed after a Q&A session.
